3. Relationships between metrics
The following are some arithmetic relationships to keep handy when interpreting metrics. Note that since numbers are expressed as percentages, you'll need to divide by 100 after multiplying two percentages to get the product percentage.
- CTR = VCTR X Visibility
- ECTR = Click Engagement X CTR
- EVCTR = Click Engagement X VCTR
- Conversion-to-Shown Ratio = Conversion-to-Click Ratio X CTR
- Conversion-to-Visible Ratio = Conversion-to-Click Ratio X VCTR
- Conversion-to-Shown Ratio = Conversion-to-Visible Ratio X Visibility
These relationships are helpful when you are thinking of the levers that you can pull to affect a particular metric. For instance, to improve CTR, you can try to improve VCTR (by improving recommendation quality or moving the widget to a place where people's eyes are more likely to focus) or you can improve visibility (by moving the widget to a location higher up the page, rather than burying it below ad units).
Similarly, to improve ECTR, you can improve CTR (by recommending items people are more likely to click), or you can improve click engagement (by recommending items people are more likely to stay on once they click).
